How it works
The decoder combines three things. The wording sets the length, fabric and shoes. The time of day moves the answer by about one step, because the same wording is dressier after 5pm. The season decides the layer rather than the dress.
The rules are written by the editor from the etiquette references listed below, not generated. Each answer gives what to wear, what to avoid, the adjustments for time and season, and outfit posts at the same level of formality.
Where the wordings get confused
Two wordings cause most of the trouble. Black tie optional means a long dress is welcome but a formal midi is correct, and it is often misread as permission to wear a work dress. Semi-formalsits at the same length as cocktail but in quieter fabrics, and the two are often treated as the same thing.

Dress to the more formal one. An invitation that says “cocktail, black tie welcome” is telling you the room will lean formal.
Does the decoder work for events other than weddings?
