How do I measure my foot?

Stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall, wearing the socks you'd wear with the shoes. Mark the tip of your longest toe, which isn't always the big toe, and measure from the wall to the mark. Do it late in the day and use the longer foot.

Where the numbers come from

Women's US sizes run about 2.5 above UK sizes. Japanese sizes are the foot length in centimeters. EU sizes count in Paris points of two-thirds of a centimeter, so they never line up exactly with the others, and charts round them differently. The foot lengths are the ones most size charts give for each US size.

Foot length is the only measurement that means the same thing everywhere. If a brand publishes insole lengths, choose the size that gives you about 0.2 to 0.4 inches (0.5 to 1 cm) of room beyond your foot.

Width, which no size covers

None of these systems measures width. If a shoe fits in length but presses across the ball of the foot, look for a wider fit rather than a bigger size, which will slip at the heel.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the same size fit differently in two brands?

Shoes are built on different lasts, and a size only describes length. Compare the brand's published insole length with your measured foot instead.

Should I size up for boots?

Only if you will wear thick socks. Boots are usually cut a little roomier already, and sizing up can leave your heel slipping.

When should I measure my feet?

Late in the day, when feet are largest, wearing the socks you plan to wear. Measure both feet and use the longer one.
